Have continued pruning. Am trying for woody shoots out of the initial two shoots. Like the picture below.

I have new found respect for the art of grape growing. And I’ve never even tried making wine!
One thing I should add here. I’ve read that if you are growing vines out in the field that you shouldn’t fertilize them. I’m not doing that since in container gardening the constant water causes the nutrients to leach out of the soil and through the bottom of the pot. I’ve been using granulated, MiracleGro for flowers and fruits and vegetables. Although, let me just say I am skeptical that I will ever get grapes.

Just came across this blog, and am totally impressed. How I would love to do this! I don’t see why you shouldn’t have a harvest of grapes; it’s been done before. A friend of mine has a rooftop container vineyard and has more grapes than she knows what to do with. I look forward to seeing how your project progresses!

I loved finding your blog! We just planted our own extensive (!) vineyard–7 vines in our Portland, Oregon front yard. It will be fun to compare East Coast vs. West Coast experiences with growing wine grape vines. This is an experiment for us, too.
We haven’t been great about blogging lately, but take a look at our site. We’ll be posting many pics next week.
